In a narrow bylane of Kolkata, amidst the chaos of honking traffic and rushing feet, a quiet revolution has been growing, not with banners or headlines, but with clothes, food packets, and open hearts. It’s called Ushor, short for United Sympathetic Hands Of Relief, and behind this heartwarming initiative is Biswadeb Mukherjee, a compassionate soul whose life mantra echoes through Ushor’s tagline:

"Whatever is spare to you is a need for someone."

Ushor isn’t a business. It’s not even an NGO in the conventional sense. It’s a community built from the ground up, with shared passion and relentless compassion. Since 2012, this volunteer-run initiative has brought smiles to thousands across West Bengal, driven by nothing more than empathy, collective effort, and the desire to stand beside the underprivileged.

A Dream Come True at Eden Gardens

April 8, 2025, marked another milestone for Ushor. In its annual “Dream Come True” initiative, 55 orphaned children were taken to witness a live IPL match at Eden Gardens, complete with comfortable travel, hearty meals, and lots of excitement. For many, it was their first experience at a stadium, and their smiles lit up the stands brighter than the floodlights.

Ushor Shresto Pujo: Tradition of Giving, Since 2012

Durga Puja, a celebration of grandeur and devotion, becomes even more meaningful through Ushor Shresto Pujo. Continuing its 13-year-old tradition, Ushor is distributing 8,000 new clothes this year to orphanages, shelter homes, specially-abled children, kids of sex workers, senior citizens in old-age homes, and villagers living in the remote interiors of the Purulia district.

Additionally, 200 orphaned children will be taken on a Durga Puja darshan tour by bus, complete with delicious meals from reputed restaurants. On the Puja days, 500 food packets will be handed out, spreading festive warmth to those who need it most.

From Spare to Share: Ushor's Ongoing Efforts

Ushor’s work goes beyond festivals. Its volunteers collect old but usable clothes, medicines, and stationery, and distribute them to people in need, proving that a small act of sharing can make a big difference. This model thrives not on monetary donations, but on tangible contributions and volunteer participation. The belief is simple yet powerful: empathy can be a bigger currency than money.

A Passionate Journey, Not a Professional Venture

Biswadeb Mukherjee’s journey began in 2012, not with a business blueprint, but with a simple idea: doing good together. Ushor was built by people from all walks of life,  teachers, engineers, homemakers, students, who came together to form a support system for society’s most neglected.

“Ushor is our passion, not our profession,” Biswadeb proudly says. Every initiative is powered by the professional skills and voluntary spirit of the team, not by corporate funds.

Rising Through Crisis: Ushor During COVID-19

When the world shut down during the pandemic, Ushor stepped up. The organization:

Provided ration kits to daily wage earners

      Distributed cooked meals outside hospitals

Supplied oxygen concentrators and other essential devices

Continued to send monthly rations to orphanages and old-age homes

Even a global recession couldn’t deter the spirit of Ushor. Its model, rooted in community contribution rather than financial dependence, proved remarkably resilient.

A Life Lesson from Ushor

“Try to be considerate with the people who all are in need,” says Biswadeb.
This simple truth forms the soul of Ushor. It’s not charity. It’s humanity.

Looking Ahead: Vision for the Future

The dream doesn’t end here. Biswadeb’s vision is to expand Ushor’s reach to stand beside more underprivileged people, across more regions, with a deeper impact. Every new volunteer, every shared item, every small act adds another drop to the ocean of change Ushor is creating.
